The RealSystem Media Commerce Suite provides for the creation, management, and delivery of secure RealMedia files to consumers. The 4 individual components of the system can be implemented independently by each entity in the media creation and delivery chain; and work together to insure that consumers can only play media content that they are legally allowed to.

In brief, the RealSystem Media Commerce Suite encodes and encrypts media files before they are delivered to the consumer, storing the encryption key information and unique ID of the media for later use. The consumer accesses such a file using a Media Commerce enabled player, which can then interact directly with a Web retailer's licensing platform (which identifies the content in question via the unique ID generated when the content was created). The Web retailer can then generate the necessary license for the user if appropriate and additionally can provide the key to the player needed to decode and play the stream.

The individual components of the RealSystem Media Commerce Suite that accomplish these tasks are the RealSystem Packager, which encrypts the package, creates the encryption key for the Web retailer, and generates a unique ID for the content; the RealSystem License Server which allows for the creation and management of specific business rules for selected content and can both generate licenses for consumers and access encryption information for the content as originally provided by the Packager; the Media Commerce Upgrade for RealPlayer that allows the RealPlayer to play content encoded in the secure .rms format; and finally the RealSystem Server 8.0 plugin that allows a RealSystem Server to deliver secure streams to end users.

As a future enhancement, RealNetworks plans to enable the RealSystem Media Commerce Suite to support their proposed XMCL (eXtensible Media Commerce Language) standard, allowing the suite to communicate with 3rd party DRM components using an agreed upon, standardized method.
