Backflip is a free Web based service that allows users to create their own Yahoo-like categorized online listing of their favorite Web sites. The service is accessed through the Web from any computer with a Web browser.

Users register for the service by selecting their user name and password and providing basic geographical information. They are then provided with instructions to install a small "Backflip" button on their browser toolbar that allows them to instantly add any page they visit to their categorized listings automatically. Users can create their own folder based structure for their directory listings, and can either file the selected page directly in the folder of their choice, or elect to have Backflip automatically file it. Users can also choose to automatically add their existing bookmarks and favorites to their listings.

Pages that have been filed into folders can then be searched by the user, similar to other popular search engines and directories. The latest feature of the service, called "Show and Tell," allows users to select specific folders from within their portfolio and share them with friends. After selecting the folders to share and the friends to share them with, backflip automatically notifies each friend and invites them to add the folder to their collection. Each friend then receives a message as new pages are added to the folder.
