AppCelera ICX

Internet Content Acceleration Device

Packeteer's AppCelera ICX is an Internet content accleration product for Web masters and site administrators that is installed next to the Web server. Based on the Workfire Server (Workfire is being acquired by Packeteer), the device sniffs a visitor's browser and connection speed and automatically delivers optimized pages to the user based on their current platform. Once an optimized page is created and delivered to the user, it is stored in the AppCelera's cache to speed retrieval when requested by users with similar platforms. For dynamically generated pages (such as from a database), AppCelera is able to determine if the data transformation will be beneficial to the user (based on their connection speed) and either delivers the page directly or performs optimizations as appropriate.

AppCelera ICX applies both decompression and page rendering optimization algorithms to delivered HTML pages. Packeteer claims that the device can compress a typical HTML page by up to two-thirds of its original size, reducing the bandwidth (and therefore time) required to deliver the page to the user. Additionally, the device is able to translate content into formats that are known to display most quickly on the user's specific browser, meaning that the resulting information sent can be rendered and displayed to the user as quickly as possible.

The device is installed by plugging it in next to the server (between the server and other network devices) and configured using a Web based interface. No changes are required to the Web server itself or the pages delivered by the server.

A new version of the appliance (the ICX-75) is specifically designed for deployment in Enterprise uses or large Internet data centers. The ICX-75 can accelerates the delivery of Web apps in corporate Intranets or extranets.

AppCelera ICX is now available. Visit the Packeteer Web site for current pricing.
