Lanxoma
Requires Authorization For, and Then Records Root-Level Actions
Lanxoma is a Windows-based platform billed by the vendor as a "Restricted Access Permission System." In brief, the product requires that end users obtain direct authorization before allowing them to perform admin-level actions from their workstations; and then once that permission is granted, records all of the activities actually performed by the end user--including keystrokes, mouse movements, screen displays, and audio.
The product is deployed as a thin client directly to Windows (2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008) workstations (Terminal Services deployments are also supported). A Web server is used on the backend, with the vendor noting that no specific OS is required at the backend. When admin-level access is required, the tool can notify the necessary person in the escalation chain via E-mail, instant message, or text message (SMS). The end user must include with the request the purpose of the access as well as the estimated time needed. If appropriate, access is granted by the supervisor for a pre-determined period of time, during which the end user's actions are recorded and stored in MPG4 or Flash file formats (the vendor notes that their "grid" analysis capture technology minimizes the amount of data that needs to be recorded, stored, or streamed). The end user is notified that their actions are being recorded.
When complete, the same supervisor is notified and the recorded session is stored for review as necessary. The stored session is digitally signed, and supervisors are also able to launch their own "clandestine" recording sessions (a feature that can be disabled, if desired). Clandestine recordings are also stored in the archive along with audit information (who triggered it) for future review. Supervisors require specific access rights assignments to launch a clandestine recording, and the organization can additionally configure the product to generate alerts or messages to higher-level personnel when clandestine recordings are launched.
In addition to its use as a surveillance tool, the vendor notes that the software is also targeted to training and collaboration scenarios. Other product features include support for screen broadcast and screen sharing, and full-text search support for recorded sessions.
