HyperIP

Optimizes WAN TCP/IP Data Transmissions

HyperIP provides data transmission optimization features for WAN links; the technology seeks to enable the transmission of more data over existing bandwidth, allowing organizations to make more efficient use of WAN IP connections. I.E., the technology does not enable the data to be physically sent over the WAN any faster; but rather aggregates the data and applies algorithms such that more of the data can be sent within the same corresponding time frame as a standard TCP transmission.

To accomplish this, the vendor states that the technology leverages techniques including optimized window sizing, selective acknowledgement, minimized retransmissions, dynamic rate adjustments, and data compression. Dynamic rate adjustments enable the technology to grapple with pipe congestion issues (both sides of the connection are able to dynamically adjust their send and receive rates as necessary), while compression algorithms are optimized to be applied to aggregated data blocks of 4,000 to 64,000 bytes (as opposed to individual 1.5K packets). Compression is LZO based and includes the ability to examine the transferred data and avoid the re-compression of already compressed data. The result of these and other technologies, according to vendor figures, is a 3 to 10 time increase in WAN data throughput, or transmission speeds of up to 800 Mb/sec.

The technology is especially targeted to data replication (i.e., disaster recovery, geographic distribution, etc.) or FTP usages.

HyperIP is deployed at both ends of the connection; either as a hardware appliance or a virtual (VMware ESX Server) appliance, as a transparent gateway between the applications at both end of the pipe. The applications themselves needn't be altered to work with the appliance; as its technology is applied in real-time as data is sent from the source to the target location. Management is via a Web-based GUI and SNMP.

New to the vendor's HyperIP line is the availability of the technology as a managed service; allowing providers to offer HyperIP-based acceleration to their customers on a one-time or recurring basis.
