WatchGuard SSL 500 / SSL 1000

Provides SSL Protected Remote Access to Network Resources

The WatchGuard SSL 500 and SSL 1000 boxes are stand-alone VPN products that provide for organizations a way to allow their remote workforce to access and use network applications and resources. The 1U appliances are deployed behind the corporate firewall and remote end-users would access the appliance through their Web browsers or an automatically downloaded and updated thin client (both ActiveX and Java are supported). The vendor states that the appliances ship with all features enabled; no additional components need to purchased or implemented for use. Web-browser based access provides the user with a Web-portal like experience through which they can access published apps; while the thin client provides tunneled access to the network resources themselves.

Administrators can centrally manage the users and groups allowed to access the network via an administrative tool that can manage multiple SSL appliances (clustering support is included, for pairs of appliances or multiple appliances, with support for client-level failover). Policies can be defined governing which users/groups have access to which applications and resources. Additionally, endpoint checking enables the client component to scan the user's machine for such items as the IP address, operating system, firewall settings, patch level, and anti-virus software status before allowing the endpoint to connect to the network.

End users can authenticate themselves to the appliance via multiple available methods, including the OTP-based MobileID that can leverage SMS messaging or handheld software, as well as providing support for access tokens including RSA, VASCO, and VeriSign. Once authenticated, Single Sign-On features enable the user to be automatically authenticated to individual network resources, and Federated Identity features enable inter-department or inter-business authentications.

Other features of the platform include support for session timeouts, automatic client activity tracking and end-of-session cleanup, and logging & reporting of administrative actions.

The WatchGuard SSL 500 and SSL 1000 appliances are expected to be available later this month (by early April). The WatchGuard SSL 500 (supports a maximum of 500 concurrent authentications) with a 10 user license is $5,000, while the WatchGuard SSL 1000 (supports a maximum of 1000 concurrent authentications) with a 10 user license lists for $8,500.
