VPN Firewall Brick

Family of VPN/Firewall Devices Can Be Centrally Managed

Lucent's VPN Firewall portfolio is built around the VPN Firewall Brick appliances, which are served in multiple flavors targeted to small office through data center-grade deployments. The bricks are supplemented by IPSec clients, and the Lucent Security Management Server (LSMS) software, which allows for the central management and control of up to 10,000 Brick devices and 100,000 individual IPSec Client users.

The Bricks themselves are deployed as Layer-2 bridges on the network, and utilize a proprietary (from Bell Labs) thin operating system. In addition to VPN and firewall, featured capabilities of the bricks also include bandwidth management at the server and user levels (via Class Based Queueing; traffic can be classified by physical interface, virtual firewall, policy rule and session); and virtualization via support for both virtual firewall definitions and VLAN support. When coupled with the vendor's central management software (LSMS), the plaform also provides support for IP-specific denial-of-service attack protection, and application-layer defense and content-level security including command blocking, URL blocking and virus scanning.

Individual VPN Firewall Bricks currently offered by the vendor include:

- VPN Firewall Brick 20: With 3 10/100 ports and support for 100 Mb/sec firewall throughput and 3 Mb/sec 3DES throughput. Up to 1,000 concurrent sessions, 55 VPN tunnels, and 20 virtual firewalls are supported.

- VPN Firewall Brick 50: The newest entry in the line. The 50 includes 3 10/100 ports and supports 195 Mb/sec firewall throughput and 75 Mb/sec 3DES throughput (60 Mb/sec AES). Up to 1,000 VPN tunnels, 4,094 VLANs, and 50 virtual firewalls are supported.

- VPN Firewall Brick 150: With 4 10/100 ports and support for 330 Mb/sec firewall throughput and 127 Mb/sec 3DES throughput. Up to 300,000 concurrent sessions, 1,000 VPN tunnels, and 150 virtual firewalls are supported.

- VPN Firewall Brick 350: With 7 10/100 ports, a single 10/100/1000 port, and support for 787 Mb/sec firewall throughput and 404 Mb/sec 3DES throughput (with the inclusion of an optional encryption card). Up to 1,000,000 concurrent sessions, 5,400 VPN tunnels, and 300 virtual firewalls are supported.

- VPN Firewall Brick 500: With 14 10/100 ports, a single 10/100/1000 port, and support for 975 Mb/sec firewall throughput and 450 Mb/sec 3DES throughput (with the inclusion of an optional encryption card). Up to 600,000 concurrent sessions, 8,000 VPN tunnels, and 500 virtual firewalls are supported.

- VPN Firewall Brick 1100: With 7 10/100 ports, up to 4 GigE Fiber or 13 GigE copper ports, and support for 3 Gb/sec firewall throughput and 1 Gb/sec (Fiber) or 700 Mb/sec (copper) 3DES throughput (with the inclusion of an optional encryption card). Up to 4,000,000 concurrent sessions, 7,150 VPN tunnels, and 1,000 virtual firewalls are supported.

The VPN Firewall Bricks are available now. Pricing ranges from $895 to $85,995 depending on model and options (some models may require additional options). The newest entry (the 50) carries a suggested list price of $895. LSMS is base priced at $1,895, which includes a license for 5 Bricks and 100 IPSec clients.
