Ndurant

High Availability VPN and Firewall Based On Check Point

The Resilience Ndurant product line consists of network appliances pre-loaded with software from Check Point and providing high availability firewall and VPN support for enterprise networks.

Each of the appliances feature a hardened Red Hat Linux-based operating system (the new S-Series appliances are based on Check Point's SecurePlatform, which in turn is a Check Point customized Red Hat O/S), and is offered with one of three availability levels: iHA Ready, single module offerings without failover capabilities that can be upgraded to HA capability at a later time; iHA Hot Standby (not supported in the S-Series), dual-module offerings providing active/standby failover capabilities (failover between the modules occurs after a 30 second pause); and iHA with Cluster XL, which allows for full immediate failover with no session loss in active/standby or load sharing deployments. In the iHA-Ready and iHA deployments, only a single license of the Check Point software is required; while the full failover offering with Cluster XL support requires a dual Check Point Cluster XL license. An additional "iHA SuperCluster" deployment configuration is also supported for some appliances; wherein four modules are deployed as an active/passive cluster (i.e., the individual pairs of modules operate as their own Cluster XL deployment; while the two pairs together provide an active/passive failover configuration). In the SuperCluster deployments a dual Check Point Cluster XL license is required.

In dual-module implementations individual modules can be hot-swapped. The failover capabilities of the units are based on the vendor's RESlink architecture, which, according to the vendor, offers high-availability across all system layers (O/S, I/O drivers, application, hardware, etc.) as opposed to only the application layer. Other features shared in common between the Resilience appliances include a 5-step GUI setup application, and automatic configuration capabilities between modules.

Individual offerings in the Ndurant product line include:

- The "Express" line (Ndurant 10, 20, and 30) with firewall performance ranging from 400 Mb/sec to 2.2 Gb/sec and VPN performance from 95 Mb/sec to 500 Mb/sec. Model 10 includes 2 10/100 (one for intermodule synchronization) and 4 10/100/1000 ports; while the 20 and 30 both boast 6 10/100/1000 ports plus 2 10/100/1000 ports for the synchronization.

- The 40 and 50 models, both with 5 10/100/1000 ports standard (upgradeable to 11) plus 2 10/100/1000 ports for synchronization. Performance is 1.5 and 2.2 Gb/sec (firewall) and 800 / 900 Mb/sec VPN. Up to 10 1 Gb Fiber ports can also be loaded on these.

- The 60, 70, and 80 models; dual CPU modules with the same port configuration as the 40/50s. Performance ranges from 3 to 5.2 Gb/sec (firewall) and 1 to 1.4 Gb/sec VPN.

- The 65, 75, and 85 models; 3U versions of the 60, 70, and 80 models that increase the port counts (up to 31 10/100/1000 ports and up to 20 fiber ports) and add support for dual hot-swappable power supplies.

- The "v" versions of the 60 - 85 models (v60, v65, v70, etc.) each of which include Check Point's VSX (enabling the definition of virtual gateway configurations within the modules) and supporting from 50 to 250 virtual gateway definitions, depending on model.

- S-Series: The newest entries in the line, based on Check Point's SecurePlatform OS. The S-Series appliances are themselves expected to be offered in multiple models pre-loaded with either Check Point VPN-1 Power or VPN-1 UTM; with most models including RESlink capabilities.

The S-Series models are expected in March, with pricing ranging from about $1,500 (25 users) to $52,000 (carrier-class). These prices do not include licensing fees for the Check Point Software (SecurePlatform and VPN-1 application).
