RouteFinder
Appliances Combine Internet Access, Firewall, and VPN w/Security Options
The RouteFinder product line from Multi-Tech is a single Internet access appliance providing firewall, VPN, and optional security capabilities (E-mail anti-virus and Web URL filtering). Multiple flavors of the appliance are served, targeted to SOHO or SMB deployments.
Features in common to the models include shared Internet access via PPPoE, DHCP or static IP; support for IPSec and PPTP VPN tunneling with 3DES and AES encryption; and a stateful packet inspection firewall with DNAT, SNAT, and IP masquerade support and the ability to define packet filter rules. The routers are managed via a Web browser interface (the SMB models also support HTTPS or SSH management).
For SOHOs, the vendor offers the RouteFinder SOHO appliances (RF820/RF830). The RF820 supports up to 10 IPSec tunnels and includes a single WAN port for connectivity to a DSL or Cable modem, a built-in 4 port switch, and a serial port for dial-access backup; while the RF830 adds to the RF820 feature set dual WAN ports with failover.
For SMBs, the RouteFinder line (RF850/RF860) includes spam filtering, optional E-mail anti-virus checking (via Kaspersky); and optional Web URL filtering (via SurfControl). In addition, the newer versions of the RouteFinder platform add a solid-state Flash-drive based design, QoS/bandwidth allocation features, HA support (wherein two connected RouteFinders can be deployed with failover), and dual WAN ports for load balancing or failover (the second WAN port can also be configured for DMZ use). The RF850 supports up to 50 VPN tunnels and includes a serial port for dial-backup; while the RF860--with four times the memory--supports up to 100 VPN tunnels and includes a built-in modem for dial backup.
Each of the appliances is now shipping and includes a two-year warranty. Base pricing ranges from $299 (RF820) to $1,699 (RF860). The A/V and URL filtering options are priced from $399 to $699 depending on model. Finally, the vendor also offers VPN Client Software in packs of 1, 5, and 10 users ($79 - $579).
