Enterprise VM Converter

Remotely Deploy Virtual Servers from Source Computers

Enterprise VM Converter is a point and click tool that allows for the deployment of virtual server files from source Windows computers; it takes a physical source server and creates from it a guest operating system on a virtual machine. The administrator runs the Enterprise VM Converter Client; and both the source computer (that will be used as the basis for the conversion) and the target computer and file name can be selected from within the interface. The source and target machines can both be selected from network drop-down lists, and the vendor notes that neither computer requires the installation of special software.

Supported virtual servers for creation include VMware (ESX Server 2/3, Workstation, Server, ACE, and GSX Server), MS Virtual PC (2004/2007), and MS Virtual Server (2005/2005 R2).

The client GUI supports both manual (one-at-a-time) conversions, as well as "batch" conversions where source and target computer pairs can be selected and setup as tasks that can be performed immediately (and simultaneously), on a scheduled basis, or sequentially. Whether launched immediately or on a schedule, the conversion process can be monitored by the administrator. Both drag and drop and wizard-based conversion specifications are supported in the GUI. A reboot cycle is not required on the source machines.

Additional features and capabilities in the conversion process include the ability to create virtual volumes with a larger size than the volume on the source computer; and the ability to specify the virtual machine type, virtual disk type, HAL type, and disk adapter type of the target machine. Additionally, for some conversions the administrator may need to specify to the software the location of the O/S source and patch files.

The vendor states that the product supports both physical-to-virtual and virtual-to-virtual conversions.

Enterprise VM Converter joins the vendor's existing VM Optimizer offering, which automatically reduces Windows-based VMs to "...their smallest possible size." The vendor additionally notes that further VM-related product releases are expected to be released in 1Q/2007.

Enterprise VM Converter is expected to be released on December 31, 2007.
