15000 Family

MPLS-Based Edge, Core, and Access Routers

The Riverstone Networks 15000 family of routers provide MPLS-based routing to carriers at the core/edge and now access layers of the network.

At the core of each of the router offerings is the vendor's ROS-X operating system, a distributed, modular platform that, according to the vendor, prevents excessive downtime by isolating and recovering from faults that would otherwise typically cause router restarts. Other features inherent in the ROS-X core include MPLS Fast Reroute, standby LSPs, link aggregation, Equal Cost Multipath (ECMP) routing and Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). Services shared amongst all the router offerings include Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPNs (P2P and multi-point); IETF VPLS and H-VPLS; multicast-optimized VPLS; IPv6 capable design and IEEE VLANs and provider bridging; while management possibilities include SNMP (v1, v2, v3), SSH v2 (available with a separate vendor software package), and a CLI.

Current entries in the 15000 product family include the 15008 and the newer 15100 and 15200 offerings.

The 15008 is a modular router offering targeted to provider core or edge deployments. The 12U router offers 8 dedicated slots for line cards (1 or 2x10GE, 12 or 24x1GE, 96x10/100, POS, ATM), 2 slots for control modules, and 4 slots for switch fabric cards. Full hardware redundancy is supported (fabrics, power supplies, control modules, and fans) and the vendor notes features including a programmable ASIC based design for future expandability and concurrent line-rate IPv6, IPv4, MPLS forwarding and Ethernet switching on every port. The 15008 lists total switch fabric capacity of 384 Gbps (192 Gbps full-duplex).

The newer 15100 and 15200 offerings are targeted to access layer deployments (small PE, MTUs, etc.) and are fixed configuration 2U routers with 20 copper or fiber (15200) or 24 (15100) Gig downlinks and dual 10 GE (15200) or 4 GE (15100) uplinks. These access routers also support IPv4, IPv6 and MPLS on every port, with the 15100 series boasting 20 Gbps non-blocking switching capacity and the 15200 series listed at 40 Gbps non-blocking switching capacity.

The 15008 is available now; the 15100 and 15200 are expected to be available in 4Q2005.
