Cisco IP/VC 3540
Enables H.323 Video And Voice Over IP Conferencing
Cisco's IP/VC 3540 is a 4 slot chassis that supports the mix-and-match loading of modules supporting both voice and video over IP conferencing. When fully loaded, the device supports up to 400 individual participants in a H.323 based video conference, with modules available that enable both application sharing and the connecting of ISDN based H.320 conference participants to H.323 IP conferences.
The chassis itself supports 3 different modules which can be loaded into the 4 available slots per the purchaser's needs: The MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) module, the Application Server/T.120 Data Conferencing Application module, and the Gateway Module.
The MCU Module enables H.323 voice and video over IP conferencing from IP-enabled PCs equipped with compatible software. Each module supports up to 100 individual video conference participants in a single or multiple simultaneous conferences with a transmission speed of 128 kbps; higher delivery rates can be achieved with lower numbers of participants. Each MCU module, for example, will support 10 participants at 1.5/2.0 Mbps. MCU modules are also available that support 60 and 30 user maximums respectively, and each of the MCU modules will support up to 150 voice-only conference participants.
The Application Server and T.120 Data Conferencing Application module sports an Intel Processor running Windows NT Server. The module works in tandem with T.120 compatible software clients, and enables the sharing of both data and Web applications in the conference, such as Web pages, spread sheets, whiteboarding, etc.
The final member of the 3540 family, the Gateway Module, allows conference participants with H.320 ISDN based conferencing equipment to join in H.323 IP conferences. The bridge allows for up to 30 simultaneous IP/ISDN conferences via two Primary Rate Interface ports configurable for T1 or E1.
The IP/VC 3540 series starts at $45,900 for 30 user configurations. The MCU and the Application Server/Data Conferencing Application modules are expected to begin shipping in March of 2001; with the Gateway Module not expected until mid-2001.
