CascadePoint
Desktop Level Archiving/Versioning by File Type
CascadePoint is targeted for use on Windows desktops (XP/2003/Vista) and provides the ability to transparently and in real-time save backup versions of selected file types to both local and network archive repositories. The product works transparently in the background of the PC, and when a targeted file type (such as Word, PowerPoint, etc.) is opened, it is automatically saved to the archive locations. From then on, whenever the file is saved, a versioned copy is also saved in the archives; with up to 99 previous versions of the file available to restore when the user needs them.
While files are archived primarily by their file type, the vendor does state that files can be further filtered by excluding specific drives, folders, or files, or files above or below a specific size. For mobile users, the product will continue to save files in the local archive while away from the LAN; with an automatic synchronization of the network archive the next time it can be reached. A differing number of versioned saves (up to 99 max) can be specified per file type. File type selection can be performed by checking available types or adding your own.
Additional features include:
- Right-click integration: A specific file version can be restored by right-clicking the file and selecting from a list of provided time-stamped older versions. An additional "Archive Now" feature is available for any file via right-click.
- An "Archive All" feature allows for the immediate archiving of files of all specified file types
- Archived files can be searched via a "Find File" function
- Files can be deleted when they're older than a specified number of days
- Archives can be compressed and/or encrypted (local, NTFS-based archives only)
