Darwin Streaming Server

Open Source Streaming Server for QuickTime

The Darwin Streaming Server is an Open Source project based on the QuickTime Streaming Server (see related link below) software available for the Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris and Windows (NT/2000 Server) operating systems.

The server supports the streaming of QuickTime files over the Internet utilizing the RTP and RTSP protocols. Also available is a proxy module, allowing for streaming delivery through firewalls. Both static files and live broadcasts can be streamed.

Later versions of the server adds "Skip Protection," the ability to collaborate with the player in such a way that dropped frames in the media stream as a result of poor Internet connections can be minimized; MPEG-4 support allowing for the serving of streamed or on-demand MPEG-4 content; and the streaming of MP3 files using Icecast protocols.

Version 4 of Darwin is available now. Visit Apple's Darwin site for further details.
