OpenLogic Enterprise / Discovery
Acquisition, Deployment, and Management of Open Source Apps
The core offering from OpenLogic, OpenLogic Enterprise provides for system administrators a platform through which they can acquire, deploy, and manage multiple open source applications for use within their Enterprise infrastructure. The open source applications available through the platform have the advantage of both being certified by the vendor (more below), as well as bearing IP infringement indemnification from the vendor (provided the customer purchases technical support for the selected open source app from the vendor).
OpenLogic Enterprise functionally consists of three components. The Enterprise Nexus runs on Windows/Linux machines, and serves as the central management server from which open source packages are managed and distributed. Individual machines link to this Nexus and receive selected open source projects via a Subscriber component, which is loaded directly on the individual machine itself (Windows/Linux/Solaris). Finally, the OpenLogic Enterprise Manager is a Web-based user interface (FF 1.5+, IE 6+) for auditing, reporting, and updating the OpenLogic Enterprise library and installations.
Core features and capabilities of the OpenLogic Enterprise Platform include:
- The Certified Open Source Library, which provides the customer with access to their choice of hundreds of open source packages for use within an Enterprise environment. The vendor states that the apps selected for inclusion within their library are certified as "Enterprise-ready" through a 42-point certification process. Both pre-defined and user-customizable application stacks can also be defined and utilized within the library.
- A knowledgebase that provides detailed information in regards to each open source application in the library, including usage and licensing information, dependencies, expert tips, configuration options (including recommended settings), pre-built integrations, an automated test library, resource links, and sample applications.
- A Management Suite providing stack customization and definition features (allowing admins to define and configure their own custom application stacks as well as extend the certified library itself with additional open source or commercial apps), policy definition and enforcement (such as corporate usage policies per license type), open source usage auditing, and automated deployment (including configuration and installation of selected apps and stacks).
Other features of the OpenLogic Enteprise platform include one-call technical support options (two levels) for all applications in the library (the vendor notes that this one contact can in turn leverage the vendor's own expert community as necessary for the fixing of bugs; with fixes contributed back to the open source package itself); and a subscription-based update service allowing for the automated receipt of new packages to the open source library as they are certified by the vendor as well as patches and application upgrades (again, as they are certified by the vendor).
New to the vendor's product arsenal is the release of OpenLogic Discovery, a free tool that allows individuals to audit and report their use of open source applications within their existing infrastructure. The vendor states that OpenLogic Discovery can identify open source components on Windows, Linux, and Solaris workstations and servers; matching them to a database of known application fingerprints consisting of better than 5,000 application versions across 900 open source packages. Both graphical and command line interfaces are provided, and a report lists all open source software identified.
OpenLogic Enterprise is offered in both Standard (as described above) and Library (access to the Certified Open Source Library only) versions. Both OpenLogic Enterprise and OpenLogic Discovery are available now. Pricing for the Library edition starts at $10,000; while pricing for the Standard edition starts at $15,000.
