Microsoft's Mobile Information Server provides the ability to wireless enable existing Windows or Web based applications so they can be accessed via wireless devices. With the Mobile Information Server, corporate users can access common intranet applications such as E-Mail, calendar, and contacts from mobile devices, while mobile carriers or ASPs can design and offer Microsoft Exchange based services directly to their mobile customers.

The primary application for and shipped with the Mobile Information Server is Outlook Mobile Access, which provides mobile access to Microsoft Exchange services such as E-Mail, calendar, and contact management. Outlook Mobile Access provides a browser-based portal access for browsing Outlook information and retrieving notifications from Outlook services. Wireless users must have a WAP based device with a microbrowser in order to use Outlook Mobile Access.

New features of the latest MIS release (MIS 2002, Enterprise Edition) include simplified setup tools at both the Enterprise and personal level and "over-the-air" synch capabilities from Pocket PCs or Pocket PC based phones to Exchange.
