iPlanet Application Server 6.5
High Performance, Scalable Web Application Infrastructure
iPlanet Application Server provides the enterprise with a scalable, high performance platform on which to develop and deploy their large-scale, transactional Web applications. Billed as a server for deploying "non-stop, large, transactional e-commerce sites," the product provides advanced availability features such as failure recovery and session management and scalability features including dynamic load balancing. Utilizing a complete set of client-side and server-side class libraries, developers can tool their applications in Java or C++. In addition, iPlanet Application Server supports the Client Independent Programming Model (CIPM) for the rapid development of applications for differing client types.
iPlanet Application Server achieves its high performance through its fully multithreaded, multiprocess architecture and advanced connection caching and pooling. Scalability is provided through dynamic load balancing and point-and-click application partioning, allowing applications to scale dynamically to support thousands of users.
Enhancements in later releases of the software include a standards based application model supporting J2EE, including Enterprise JavaBeans, JSP, JDBC, and the Java Servlet API. Distributed transaction support enables high performance and centralized management, while "failover" functionality provides enhanced application availability. Additionally, SOAP support is provided via an open-source implementation, allowing the deployment of Web services on the Java platform.
Key features of the upcoming release (6.5, expected to ship in mid-March) include the addition of the new iPLanet Application Framework, and Web Services support enhancements. The iPlanet Application Framework utilizes pre-built J2EE components to jump start developer efforts and minimize the overall application development cycle; while the new Forte for Java Web Services module and the iPlanet Process Builder seek to automate the creation of Web services via SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI support.
