BackOffice Server is an integrated server suite that simplifies the development, deployment, and management of business solutions for branch offices, departments, and mid-sized organizations. Included within the BackOffice Server suite are multiple mainline Microsoft components; including Windows 2000 Server, Exchange 2000 Server, SQL Server 2000, ISA Server 2000, Systems Management Server 2.0 and Host Integration Server 2000.

The bundled BackOffice Server package is offered to medium-sized and branch offices as a simple means to deploy multiple Microsoft components as the hub of their office networks. The bundle, which Microsoft states is priced at "about half the estimated retail price" of the servers when purchased separately, offers simple setup and management features such as turnkey Windows 2000 Server, Active Directory, and Exchange 2000 Server setup; an Internet Connection Wizard for setting up firewalls and Internet access issues; and shared fax and modem services. Additional features of the suite include the automated monitoring tool Health Monitor 2.1, and enhancements to the Microsoft Management Console including wizard based user account management, and E-Mail distribution list and Active Directory queries.

A key new feature in BackOffice Server 2000 is the MultiServer deployment option, which allows administrators to deploy only the BackOffice components they need, with the ability to "trade" components in and out of the configuration as business needs change. Additionally, MultiServer deployment allows for the installation of the suite on up to 3 separate servers, though the user must purchase separate Windows 2000 licenses for each additional server deployment.
